Dr. Stephen obtained both his DVM and PhD (Epidemiology) from the University of Saskatchewan. His research interests involve health issues that arise at the interface of human, animal and environmental health. He holds several academic and professional posts including: founding director and president of the Centre for Coastal Health; Clinical Professor in the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine (UBC); scientific director of the Animal Determinants of Emerging Disease Research Unit chair of the Board of the BC Environmental and Occupational Health Research Network and associate member UBC Centre for Disease Control;. Dr Stephen works nationally and internationally to develop and assess veterinary public health capacity and to create interprofessional research and training focused on the detection and management of environmental health risks, with an emphasis on emerging infectious diseases. He has also worked international on aquatic health issues.
