Dr. Gilleard obtained his BVSc from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Liverpool. After three years in general veterinary practice in the UK, he undertook a PhD in Parasitology at the University of Glasgow and then 5 years post-doctoral research in the Wellcome Centre for Molecular Parasitology, at the Department of Genetics, University of Glasgow. Dr. Gilleard was awarded a Wellcome Trust Travel Fellowship in 1998 to spend 2 years in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary before returning to a faculty position at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow, UK. In 2007, he was appointed Professor of Veterinary and Molecular Parasitology at Glasgow before moving to the University of Calgary in 2008 as Professor (Parasitology). He has been Associate Dean Research, in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine since 2012.

Teaching :

Dr. Gilleard teaches parasitology on a variety of courses in the DVM curriculum including VM424 (Veterinary Parasitology), VM405 (Clinical Skills II), VM400 (Clinical Presentations II), VM500 (Clinical Presentations III), VM531 (Small Ruminants and Non-Traditional Livestock) and VM854 (Equine Health)

Research / Scholarly Activities:

Dr. Gilleard’s research interests are in the field of drug resistance in parasites.  His research group uses integrated genomic and genetic approaches to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in parasites and population genetic approaches to investigate its emergence and spread. Dr. Gilleard also has an interest in the development of novel diagnostic approaches for parasitic infections and anti-parasitic drug resistance, particularly for cattle parasites.
