Dr. Fernandez received her DVM from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2000. Soon after graduation, she began a residency in clinical pathology at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2004, she became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Dr. Fernandez has been faculty at UCVM since 2005, and divides her time between teaching, research, and diagnostic pathology.
Dr. Fernandez is the course coordinator for VETM 442 Clinical Pathology, which is delivered in the second year of the DVM curriculum. This is primarily a case-based course which is complemented by both digital and hands-on microscope labs. Dr. Fernandez also teaches in other courses including Clinical Skills and Clinical Presentations.
Current research projects include the evaluation of bronchoalveolar lavage samples in horses with inflammatory airway disease, cytologic features of lymph node aspirates at the time of relapse in dogs with lymphosarcoma, and hematologic changes in cattle castrated by various methods. Dr. Fernandez is also a member of the Veterinary Education Research Group.
