There are several sources of funds to support undergraduate summer research. Please read all of the information below before you apply for an award:

Please note: All undergraduate students performing summer research in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are required to register in the SURE Program for the 2017 summer season.
Each department will formalize their own DVM candidate selection process and will forward 3 candidates to the Office of Graduate Education. Please contact your supervisor’s department head to learn more about the application process and deadlines.
The University of Calgary USRP Program is designed to give UofC undergraduate students the opportunity to work with University of Calgary researchers early in their program. Information and application forms may be found here. Value of awards: $4000.

The Graeme Bell Travel Award is designed to support travel to a conference or seminar related to your research in Health and Wellness. Information and application forms may be found here. Value of awards: $1000.

The Branch Out Neurological Foundation seeks to raise funds for the treatment and research of neurological diseases through the use of more natural and holistic approaches. Value of award of up to $7,000 for salary and travel to the BONF Conference, and project supplies. Further details and access to the online application system are available here.

Students must have secured a training position with a supervisor who is a full member of the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute for Child and Maternal Health (ACHRI) or a listed mentor on the CIHR Training Grant. The supervisor must be conducting an eligible research program that falls under the mandate of the CIHR, IHDCYH, and ACHRI. Further information and application forms may be found here.

AIHS provides motivated students with exceptional academic records an opportunity to participate in medical or health-related research at the University during the summer months. Students will receive a stipend of $1500/month for 8, 12, or 16 weeks during the period of May to August. Please see here: AIHS Summer Research Studentships.

Each year, through the Zoetis Summer Student Research Fund, Zoetis makes $8,000 available to support the salary of a summer research student at each of the Canadian veterinary colleges. This award is offered with the intent of enriching innovative research opportunities for undergraduate students. Potential research activities falling within the scope of this funding pertain to companion animal medicine and will positively impact and provide clinical applicability to the Canadian veterinary community. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to provide undergraduate and health professional students with opportunities to undertake health research projects with established investigators in an environment that provides strong mentorship. Value of award is $5,000.00 for up to four months. More information can be found here.

USRA awards are only tenable under the supervision of a faculty member who currently holds NSERC (Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada) funding. More information and application forms may be found here. Value of awards: $4,500 over 16 weeks. Students are required to submit all supporting documents online.
