Introduction to Small Animal Point of Care Focused Sonography Techniques

Point of care small animal ultrasound is becoming common place in emergency and general veterinary practice. It rapidly identifies underlying pathology and helps direct further diagnostic and therapeutic decision making, which can be lifesaving. This video podcast featuring Drs. Soren Boysen and Serge Chalhoub introduces some of the more common point of care ultrasound protocols used in everyday veterinary practice including FAST scans of the abdomen and thorax as well as regional lung ultrasounds. A brief overview of techniques, indications, and terminology is provided in a humerous and hopefully educational manner!

Pleural and lung ultrasound part 1: How to find the pleural line and identify a glide sign

In this humorous and educational podcast Drs. Soren Boysen and Serge Chalhoub introduce the basic anatomic land marks used to find the pleural line (bat sign, gator sign, rib shadows and rib heads). Through the use of very simple schematics and tips they also describe how to detect the presence of a glide sign. See their podcast on “Pleural and lung ultrasound part 3: How to diagnose pneumothorax” for further information on what the presence and absence of a glide sign implies.

Pleural and lung ultrasound part 2: A lines, B lines and the curtain sign

In this podcast Drs. Soren Boysen and Serge Chalhoub continue with Part 2 of veterinary point of care pleural space and lung ultrasound by introducing and defining A lines, B lines and the curtain sign. See their podcast on “Pleural and lung ultrasound part 1: How to find the pleural line and identify a glide sign” and “Pleural and lung ultrasound part 3: How to diagnose pneumothorax” for further information on what the presence and absence of a glide sign implies and how to rule in and rule out pneumothorax.
