What we do

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary (UCVM) partners with affiliated practices from the Distributed Veterinary Teaching Hospital (DVTH) who host core faculty members to support internship programs.

The goal of the program is to:

  • support the professional and scholarly development of the interns
  • increase interactions between UCVM and DVTH clinicians
  • and to engage partner interns in on-campus teaching opportunities

Participating interns are identified as UCVM-DVTH partner interns and will be awarded a parchment of recognition by UCVM on completion of the program.

Our current 2018-2019 Interns come from a number of places that include the US, Germany and Canada. They have all participated in Wet Labs at the CSB as part of their training. All of the interns will present several short rounds seminars and one grand rounds seminar. Please go to the link below to view the schedule for these rounds that will also include a Seminar Topic to be presented by one of our own faculty members.

Faculty members in the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences are involved in teaching across all four years of the DVM program. These courses often take place at the Clinical Skills Building where hands on learning can be facilitated.

Students that are in years one through three attend courses that are taught by VCDS faculty members. These courses cover many areas of learning some of which include the following:

  • Clinical Presentations
  • Clinical Skills
  • Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
  • Communications and Professional Skills
  • Equine Medicine and Surgery
  • Enrichment  and Wildlife Medicine
  • Equine Medicine
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Practices

Faculty members are also involved with facilitating rotations to the DVM students in their 4th year. These rotations range from emergency care to advanced surgical procedures.

There are many Veterinary Clinical and Diagnostic Services faculty members embedded in clinical practice in the Distributed Veterinary Learning Community (DVLC). The amount of time faculty spend at their clinical home varies from member to member. The following list encompasses multi discipline small animal hospitals and equine practices and hospitals in and around Calgary where our faculty members practice.

Recently several of the 2016-2017 Interns assisted with a Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS) spay and neuter clinic. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has partnered with CUPS to provide free veterinary clinics to individuals with pets that are living below the poverty level. The clinic took place at Western Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Care Centre on Friday, June 2, 2017. Drs. Serge Chalhoub and Terri Schiller organized the clinic and with assistance from Dr. Tamara MacDonald and members of the Western staff, our UCVM interns performed a number of canine and feline spay and neuter procedures.
