Dr. Dan Zuege appointed head the Department of Critical Care Medicine

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) Calgary Zone are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Dan Zuege, MD, as the head of the Department of Critical Care Medicine effective Feb. 1, 2021.

He takes over from Dr. Tom Stelfox, MD, PhD, who transitioned to scientific director of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health in November and Dr. Christopher ‘Chip’ Doig, MD, who served as interim head of the department during the transition. 

Dan earned a medical degree from the University of Alberta and his Master of Science in Respiratory Physiology and specialty training in Internal, Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at UCalgary. He is a clinical professor in the Departments of Critical Care Medicine and Medicine and member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute. 

Dan has been co-chair the University of Calgary Medical Group Executive Council since 2016, governing more than 670 physicians in southern Alberta from clinical departments in CSM/AHS facilities who also hold an academic appointment with the university. He is the current senior medical director for the Critical Care Strategic Clinical Network, a provincial community of health care professionals, operational and research leaders, and patient and family advisors who collectively enable optimal care for people with critical illness in Alberta through innovation and collaboration

Dan’s research interests and prior endeavours have focused on ICU-related infection and the development and application of technology and health informatics resources to better understand the disease states of the critically ill. He was the founding medical director for the eCritical Alberta Program, which established a province-wide critical care clinical information system in all adult, pediatric and cardiac critical care units in Alberta. He was the medical director of the Intensive Care Unit at the Peter Lougheed Centre from 2001 to 2012 and the medical director for the Southern Alberta Organ and Tissue Donation Program from 2003 to 2010.
