Calling all citizen scientists
Do you have a keen eye, a mobile phone, enjoy snacks and love exploring? If you said yes, join the Biogeoscience Institute on July 4 for BioBlitz 2025.
Taking place at the Barrier Lake Field Station, the BioBlitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species as possible — trees, flowers, plants, bugs, and animals — within a designated location and time.
“BioBlitzes are great ways to engage the public to connect to their environment while generating useful data for science and conservation,” says Briana Van Den Bussche, education co-ordinator at the Biogeoscience Institute. “It gives people a chance to explore Kananaskis, connect with nature, and learn more about biodiversity and natural sciences.”
The BioBlitz is open to all ages and abilities, as long as you have a mobile device. There will be six different guided options for participants to join, ranging from gentle strolls around the field station to a five- to six-kilometre hike at a slow pace.
