Goal 3
Engage in veterinary (DVM or equivalent) education with a global perspective
There is world-wide interest in reforming veterinary education by establishing minimum competencies and by revising veterinary curriculums to include components of globalization and One Health. UCVM is highly interested in leveraging our expertise in this process. UCVM and the University of Calgary have significant expertise in teaching and learning. This excellent opportunity will transform teaching and learning of veterinary medicine to a global perspective, create novel educational opportunities for our trainees, and allow our faculty to make a global impact on veterinary education. This will facilitate training of veterinarians with a global awareness regarding animal health, productivity, welfare and its implications for human health. In that regard, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has established guidelines for veterinary core curriculum, with flexibility to customize such curricula consistent with unique circumstances and local needs. OIE’s Twinning Veterinary Education program facilitates this process by fostering exchanges of teachers and students between a “parent” veterinary establishment (typically an accredited veterinary school) and a “partner” institution in a developing country. It is noteworthy that UCVM is currently engaged in a twinning program with Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) in Ludhiana, India (supported by OIE).
Strategies:
- Develop global partnerships in DVM curriculum or course revision/development in collaboration with UCVM.
- Engage in development of transformative teaching and learning practices at partner institutions.
- Develop programs to support foreign veterinarians in gaining licensure in countries requiring accredited credentials.
- Leverage our expertise to provide continuing education programs and development of competencies consistent with OIE guidelines for veterinarians and faculties affiliated to with our partnering institutions.
