UCVM faculty member, Hermann Schaetzl, is leading a collaboration in Germany. This collaboration involves joint research schools, symposia and exchange of students and faculty for defining new areas of academic collaboration between UCVM and the Center for Infection Biology (ZIBI) in Berlin, Germany.

Foreign lead: Freie Universitaet Berlin, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Institute of Virology (lead organization); Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Department of Wildlife Diseases; Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology. They are all part of the ZIBI, Center of Infection Biology and Immunology (https://www.zibi-berlin.de/) which hosts an international graduate school (https://www.zibi-berlin.de/training/zibi-graduate-school/index.html) and hosted a summer school with international symposium (https://www.zibi-berlin.de/events/summer-school/index.html)

Other collaborators: University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine, Snyder Institute (Paul Kubes and Craig Jenne; both adjunct faculty members UCVM)

Funding: UofC starter grant (provost)

Major accomplishments to date: UCVM sent 6 students to the ZIBI summer school in May 2018, together with 3 University of Calgary faculty. Three students were paid by German fellowships (DAAD).
