Link between inflammatory airway disease (IAD) and recurrent airway obstruction (RAO)

Dr. Leguillette previously conducted a study (2008) to determine the efficacy of a questionnaire to diagnose lung inflammation, specifically airway inflammatory disease (IAD) and recurrent airway obstruction (RAO). We would now like to follow-up with those horses to determine if IAD leads to the development of RAO over time.

Inclusion criteria: Your horse must have participated in the previous study. The horse does not need to be currently in your care.

What will we do? We will ask that you fill out a brief questionnaire. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) cytology may be done at the owner’s request.

Benefits: Owners will gain important insight into the respiratory health of their horses. Additionally, you will help fill an important gap in current respiratory knowledge.

If you were a participant in the previous study, you may have already been contacted. However, if not, please email us at heaves@ucalgary.ca. For more information on IAD and RAO, click here.
