Our Bovine Veterinarians

Bovine medicine is a critical facet of rural veterinary practice. There are many different streams of bovine medicine including beef, dairy, and reproductive health. In this aspect of veterinary medicine, there is an emphasis on herd health, genomics, and food safety. We are lucky to have many expert bovine veterinarians part of the UCVM faculty and community so tune into the videos below to learn more about their unique experiences in this field. 


Dr. Gordon Atkins

Dr. Gordon Atkins is a recently retired Professor in Production Animal Health at UCVM. His main area of interest involves all aspects of dairy herd health. He has a special interest in bovine gastrointestinal surgery and has presented numerous seminars on this topic. He is actively involved in the Holstein business as a breeder and exhibitor at many shows.


Dr. Betty Jo Bradley

Dr. Betty-Jo Bradley is an Assistant Professor of Teaching (Bovine Medicine) at UCVM. She is a boarded bovine specialist (diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners) with a keen interest in dairy medicine, surgery, and herd health. She currently sits on the Biosecurity Technical Committee with Dairy Farmers of Canada, and the Milk Quality and Udder Health Committee with the American Association of Bovine Practitioners. 

Betty-Jo and her family own and operate a cow-calf operation near Claresholm, Alberta.
