Paws, purpose and people: UCVM Community Care Clinic is changing lives
Students, volunteers and alumni are coming together to provide accessible veterinary care while supporting hands-on learning and stronger community connections
The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) is helping to improve access to veterinary care for pet owners facing financial challenges, while also creating meaningful learning opportunities for students.
Through the UCVM Community Care Clinic, veterinary students, faculty, staff and volunteers work together to provide essential care for animals whose owners may not otherwise be able to afford treatment. The clinic supports both animal health and the people who rely on their pets for companionship and stability.
The clinic has become an important part of UCVM’s commitment to community service and hands-on education. Students gain real-world clinical experience while learning about the role veterinarians can play in supporting vulnerable communities.
“The Community Care Clinic reflects what veterinary medicine is really about,” says Janine Simpson, Manager of the clinic. “It’s about caring for animals, supporting people and helping students understand the impact they can have beyond the clinic walls.”
Support from donors, volunteers and community partners help make the clinic possible. Monetary contributions help cover the cost of medical supplies, diagnostics, treatments and preventative care for animals in need.
UCVM alumni continue to play an important role in the clinic’s success. Many graduates already support the program through mentorship, volunteer work and financial contributions, helping strengthen the next generation of veterinarians while giving back to the community.
As the need for accessible veterinary care continues to grow, so does the opportunity for alumni to get involved.
UCVM graduates interested in supporting the Community Care Clinic are asked to remain patient and stay tuned for upcoming volunteer opportunities. In the meantime, those interested in making a donation can learn more by visiting https://engage.ucalgary.ca/vetmedcommunityclinic for more information.
Whether it’s sharing time, expertise or financial support, every contribution helps care for animals and the people who love them.
