Advanced Clinical Training

UCVM-DVTH Internships

Advanced UCVM Clinical training programs are supported through practice partnerships within the Distributed Veterinary Teaching Hospitals (DVTH).  Together with hosting practice veterinarians they support the clinical learning and academic educational content of internship, residency and clinical fellowship positions in the areas of small animal, equine and production animal practice.

Interns come from a number of places that have included the US, Chile, Germany and Canada. They have all participated in clinical laboratories at the CSB as part of their training. All of the interns will present several short rounds seminars and one grand rounds seminar.

One year Small Animal Rotating Internships are offered annually through the VCA C.A.R.E. Centre and VCA Western Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Centre.  Internship positions are offered by each practice through the AAVC’s Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching.

One year Equine Internships are offered through Burwash Equine ServicesMoore Equine Veterinary Centre and TD Equine Veterinary Group.  Zoological Internships are offered thought the Calgary Zoo.  Interested applicants should contact these practices directly for availability of program and the application process.

Program development underway.

Previous programs include the Simpson Ranch Fellowship in Beef Cattle Health and a clinical residency in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation.

UCVM is aware and excited by the news of new pathways towards the Certificate of Qualification through the CVMA and NEB.

Currently, we do not have an immediate way to engage veterinarians from non-accredited veterinary programs. However, we will be initiating a working group to work with the NEB and Alberta stakeholders to determine how we can provide a quality clinical year option at UCVM to fulfil the requirements of the NEB.   We are working hard towards the goal of increasing the number of skilled veterinarians available within the Alberta workforce.

This will take some time to accomplish, however we are maintaining a list of interested candidates and once further information on our progress is available, we will communicate it here and via email.  Email us to be added to our list.
