ABSTRACT
Micronutrient status is an important determinant of health in cattle. Despite this, achieving adequate micronutrient status remains a challenge for western Canadian beef production systems where most herds are deficient in copper, selenium, and vitamin A, and may have excess levels of molybdenum and sulfur. Imbalances can have a detrimental effect on cattle immune function, reproductive health, productivity, and more. The most accurate way to assess the micronutrient status of a herd is through direct sampling of representative cattle via serum, whole blood, or liver biopsy. Once a herd's micronutrient status is understood, there are a variety of options for supplementation such as free choice supplements, force feeding, and injections. Addressing micronutrient challenges in western Canadian beef herds can help to improve cattle health, immunity, fertility, welfare and production ultimately making them more successful.
