Law school welcomes three new faculty members

Research expertise include critical minerals, renewable energy, and business law and regulation.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to welcome three new faculty members, allowing the school to expand its expertise and teaching offerings in the areas of renewable energy, critical minerals, and corporate law. 

"We are thrilled to welcome Elizabeth, Daniel and Kamaal to UCalgary Law," says Dr. Ian Holloway, dean of the law school. "Their experience and research areas will allow us to expand our course offerings for students while providing world-class learning experiences and growing our research capabilities in natural resources and business law."

Dr. Elizabeth Steyn joins UCalgary Law from Western University was the Cassels Brock Fellow in Mining and Finance Law. She led Western Law's interdisciplinary sustainable development curriculum, including the Global Sustainability Certification and the Graduate Diploma in Mining Law, Finance, and Sustainability. Elizabeth's research areas include natural resource development, Indigenous law, and environmental law. 

Prior to joining UCalgary Law, Dr. Daniel Wilson enjoyed an extensive career as a corporate lawyer, senior business executive and serial entrepreneur. Daniel is the law school's new Chair in Business Law & Regulation and is cross-appointed with The School of Public Policy as the Director, Extractive Resources Governance Program & Scientific Director, Financial Markets Regulation. 

Kamaal Zaidi, BSc'97, LLM'10, has research interests in renewable energy despite being raised in an oil and gas family, and published the book Renewable Energy in Canada - Building a Sustainable Future. Kamaal will be teaching Contracts, Administrative Law, and Immigration & Refugee Law. Kamaal is no stranger to the law school having presented on numerous occasions for Saturday Morning at the Law School presented by the Canadian Institute of Resources Law.
