In Memoriam: Michael Alexander Kacmar
Editor's note: The University of Calgary is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Michael Alexander “Lex” Kacmar. The in memoriam below is shared courtesy of Kacmar’s family.
Michael Alexander Kacmar of Calgary passed away on Jan. 11 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Lex lived life to the beat of his own drum, immersing himself in worlds of fantasy and technical creativity. He found great joy in the patient precision of his hobbies, whether assembling complex Lego models or watching intricate designs come to life layer by layer on his 3D printer. His curiosity and technical skill were further reflected in his robotics projects and unique inventions.
A student of computer science at the University of Calgary, Lex’s studies were tragically interrupted two years into his degree by his illness. He cherished his summers in Canal Flats, B.C., spent biking back roads and swimming with friends. Lex fostered deep connections through shared passions, surrounding himself with a community of fellow gamers and like-minded classmates.
Lex is survived by his parents, Boris and Edith; his brothers, Jacob and Matthew; and his devoted partner, Alys, who remained closely by his side throughout his illness.
We feel Lex’s loss deeply, a grief amplified by a life cut far too short. While we hold onto his memory with profound gratitude, we mourn the unrealized possibilities and the paths he will never walk. He left us far too soon.
